Investigations of Mathematics Literacy of 9th Grade Students in the Context of PISA 2012


The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), an educational research of OECD is an international study that evaluates the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students. This study aimed to determine the mathematical literacy levels of all 9th grade students who are receiving an education in a district outside of the sampling in our country and the factors that affect these levels and to compare the acquired results with the environments in Turkey. A quantitative research approach was adopted in the study. The working group for the research comprised 256 ninth-grade students who were receiving an education in the Savaştepe district in the Balıkesir province in 2016-2017. Data from the study was accessed with the “student survey” and “mathematical literacy test”, which were used in the PISA 2012 application to determine the students’ mathematical literacy and proficiency levels and the variables that affect this. According to the results of the study, the mathematical literacy proficiency level for the students who participated in the application was level 2, and this result is consistent with the PISA 2012 results. Although there are no significant relationships between the selected independent variables and students’ levels of mathematical literacy, relationships between the independent variables themselves were encountered.
